Make Sure Your Path is Clear
Your ability to see out of your Volkswagen's windshield is one of the most important things when driving. Ensure your windshield is always cleaned properly, especially during the extreme weather conditions we can encounter in the Duluth area. New Volkswagen Wiper Blades can help keep rain, snow and debris off your windows. Windshield wiper blades that are specially designed for the rigors of weather, but running them over debris, ice, and snow can damage them. Using sturdy wipers and treating them well will give you crystal-clear visibility. Like all other components on your Volkswagen, the windshield wipers are of the highest quality.
Is it time to replace your VW windshield wipers? It is recommended by Volkswagen and Volkswagen of Duluth to replace your wiper blades at each oil change. The generally recommended timeline is every six months to a year, though at Volkswagen of Duluth, our rule of thumb is to replace them when they no longer provide clear visibility. You use your wipers more than you think. Those rubber strips can wear down over time or receive damage from ice or debris, so it important to occasionally inspect your wiper blades.
Look for these signs of damage:
- Cracks – Is the rubber one smooth piece or is it cracked, split or broken off in places? If you see imperfections in the rubber strip, that means it’s time for new wiper blades.
- Streaks – Do you notice a consistent film on your windshield, even after cleaned it off? Wipe down the blades, and if it still is not clear, that’s another sign your wipers need to be replaced.
- Noise – Do your wipers make that awful chattering, rubbing, or scraping sound when they drag across the glass? This means they do not have proper contact with the windshield or only have it some of the time, and they need to go.
- Bent or Mis-shapen Metal – Rough treatment, such as during ice removal and car washes, can damage the metal part of the wipers. If the metal is damaged, contact with the windshield will be impaired or the wipers can cause costly permanent damage to your windshield glass. Time to replace!

How to Easily and Properly Change Windshield Wiper Blades
- Find the right size wiper blades for your VW vehicle. Windshield wiper blades vary in size. You’ll want to make sure you find the kind that fits your car. You can measure the blades currently on your vehicle or consult your owner’s manual to find the exact measurements.
- Lift the wiper arm and depress the tab on its underside to release the blade. Once released, you will be able to slide the blade downwards and out of the arm.
- Replace the blade with a new one by carefully pulling it into place. You’ll hear a clicking sound once the blade is in position. Once completed, gently lower the arm back down.
- Repeat for the second arm. Replacing both at the same time is a good idea even though only one may be bad.
- Test your wipers to check your work before you drive for safety reasons.
