Volkswagen ID.4 Drone Command Concept Debuts at 2022 SEMA Show

Volkswagen ID.4 Drone Command Concept Vehicle

Volkswagen showed off their impressive concept lineup at this year’s SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Among several showings of specialty equipment, one of the most exciting was the ID.4 Drone Command Concept. Combining futuristic concepts with real-world technology, the drone command is set to serve its purpose within the next decade.

Mobile Drone Response System Concept

The Specialty Market Equipment Association Show is a chance for automakers to show off their latest and greatest innovations, and Volkswagen did just that with their drone concept. The collaboration with Tennessee Valley Authority is part of the plan to equip the utility service with 100% electric vehicles by 2030, a goal that VW was ready to meet head-on. By modifying an ID.4 AWD Pro S, TVN and VW are expecting to use the vehicle as an all-in-one response system.

The Mobile Drone Response System concept has been tested rigorously for the past year with new accessories and features added along the way. Its 18-inch wheels are made to get the vehicle into tough spots, assisted by the all-terrain tires, heavy-duty suspension, and H&R Trak+ Wheel Spacers. More utility is found both inside and outside with roadside emergency lights and a Thule Caprock roof rack for hauling all the necessary equipment. Trunk storage includes a custom-built storage system to house drones and other equipment, while the portable power station makes the vehicle its own power unit. Floodlights and a rear digital display give the ID.4 a full view of the surrounding area, and recovery boards and a fire extinguisher add to the safety features.

Other Concepts

Along with the mobile drone, Volkswagen’s lineup at SEMA includes more concepts and accessory packages for the future. Basecamp models on the Atlas and Taos are equipped to take drivers off the road in camping-ready vehicles equipped with air mattresses, underbody aluminum plates, and more off-road accessories fit for an adventurer. Other Volkswagen accessories, like hitch-mounted bike racks, splash guards, and first aid kits are included in this year’s showing. Also included are prototypes like the Golf A59, a rally-inspired vehicle made for the racetrack.
