When it’s time to make the switch to an electric vehicle, there are a few key differences that you should know about. The most frequent questions we get about going electric are about charging and how to adapt. Luckily, charging your EV can be quite simple. Read more about the different methods for charging your electric vehicle and how it can be easier than you think.
Charging your EV at home is the most convenient option for most. After all, your vehicle is typically sitting there for hours at a time, so why not take advantage and power up the battery? When it comes to charging at home, many EVs have two options: 120V charging and Level 2 charging. The first method uses a standard wall outlet that your EV can plug right into. While it might be convenient, 120V charging isn’t typically enough power for a fully-electric vehicle. It’s enough power for your lamp or toaster, but a wall outlet doesn’t provide the output that’s needed to charge a vehicle enough overnight.
However, EVs like the Volkswagen ID.4 also have another at-home charging option: the Level 2 charger. Volkswagen works with Electrify Home to assist homeowners with installing a fully capable at-home charging station. This professionally-installed charger can power up your ID.4 overnight, typically in 7.5 to 11.5 hours, allowing you to travel up to 275 miles on a single charge.
So, what happens when you’re on the road and need to power up? Fuel stations are available for conventional gas-powered vehicles, but luckily, EV charging stations are popping up all around the country. There are currently around 45,000 public charging stations in the U.S. with more plans for infrastructure in the near future. Many public charging stations offer DC fast charging, as well. Using Electrify America’s network of charging stations, the ID.4 includes three years of 30-minute charging sessions at over 1,700 stations. DC charging can take the ID.4 from 10 to 80% in around 30 minutes, making for a fast and convenient road trip solution.
