VW to Implement NACS for EVs
One of the most important cars of the future will undoubtedly be the electric vehicle, and each and every day, they are getting better and more accessible to own. One aspect where EV customers need clarification is the various charging standards. Some cars have one style of charger, while others have another, and Tesla has their own.
North American Charging Standard
However, Volkswagen has recently said they will be joining Tesla and other automakers in utilizing the North American Charging Standard, or NACS, to allow a more significant amount of chargers to be used throughout North America, including Tesla Superchargers, with all of their new 2025 and beyond models. They are currently working on a plan that will allow existing VW EV customers to have access to the new standard charging plug.
A Word From Volkswagen
“This is great news for our electric vehicle customers in the North American Region,” said Pablo Di Si, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “This potentially provides them with access to more than 15,000 additional charging points as well as the current near-4,000 DC fast charging outlets operated by Electrify America. It would mean that customers of our fast-selling electric vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 will have access to an extensive and growing charging network.”
What Is The NACS?
Tesla Motors developed the NACS as their own charging standard, and it has been used with their cars since 2021. It became open to other automakers to use starting in 2023.
A World From Tesla
Rebecca Tinucci, Senior Director of Charging at Tesla, said: “Earlier this year, the North American Charging standard was just an idea. Today, with the VW Group’s commitment, almost every major automotive manufacturer is onboard, rallying behind a shared vision of improving charging experiences for all EV drivers. This is only the beginning of our industry-wide efforts to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”
More Charging Possibilities
Now that nearly every automaker, including Volkswagen, will be using NACS on all-electric vehicles, owners can access over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers and more than 3,800 DC fast chargers from Electrify America and Electrify Canada.
